Delusional Halitosis? It’s Real!

While you may chuckle at the idea of delusional halitosis, this is a real problem that real people have. What in the world is delusional halitosis? It is exactly as it is suggested—it is a condition in which people think they have bad breath, but actually do not. Many people suffer from this and it is not just an occasional feeling that maybe that hamburger made you have bad breath. This is a true phobia that can be debilitating to some people.

Delusional means that something is in the mind and when you have delusional halitosis, it is the thought or the fear of having bad breath. Most of the time when people suffer from this condition, they do not really have bad breath. This is a fear that affects about two percent of the population and while it may seem strange to you, it is real.

Reasons for Delusional Halitosis
There is no real reason that doctors can pinpoint as to why people may believe they have bad breath. It may because at one time someone made a comment about their breath or they just have a fear of offending someone. It is a little like people who believe they have stinky feet or they are fat when they really are not. Sometimes, people with delusional halitosis will spend a lot of money seeing their dentist trying to get advice and treatment for a condition that does not exist. They may also purchase many types of products such as rinses, brushes, flosses and mouthwashes to get rid of a non-existent condition. They may even feel that if they don’t chew the gum or use the mints that their breath will get worse so they may start popping more mints and gums.

It is interesting to note that when you talk about delusional halitosis, there is also condition called halitophobia. This is when people fear exhaling because they think they will offend someone with their bad breath. This is another unusual, yet very real problem to some people. This can make people sick with worry and concern. In fact, this condition, like any psychological problem can really affect a person. Some people will feel completely withdrawn and incapacitated at the idea and thought of going out in public with what they believe is bad breath. Counseling may be necessary for very severe cases.

If you believe you have bad breath, then you can do something about it. You should not suffer. One of the first things you can do is to make an appointment with your dentist and express your fears and concerns. Your dentist can be honest with you and discuss your options. You dentist will complete a full oral exam and will make sure that your teeth and gums are healthy. If you still feel that you have bad breath, you may need to seek professional help to overcome your fears and concerns. Don’t suffer in silence. Do something about it before it gets out of hand.
