What causes bad breath? It is the foods you eat? Could it be that you are not brushing and flossing like you know you should? Perhaps you have waited too long between dental visits or you smoke or drink a lot of coffee. All of these things, plus others like medical conditions, could negatively affect your breath. You don’t want bad breath, so don’t live with it. There are things you can do to combat this worrisome problem.
You know that there are a lot of products on the market that are designed to banish the bad breath forever, or at least for a little while. Some products work quite well and others will mask your rotten breath. The idea is for you to find what works for you and stick with the regimen. Good oral hygiene goes a long way in combating bad breath, but what if you can’t make it to the toothbrush and you dislike medicine-y mouthwash? There are plenty of other natural ways to fight off the bad breath.
Baking soda: It has been said before, but it is certainly worth mentioning again: baking soda helps fight off the bad breath problem. You can’t get much more natural than that. Plus, baking soda is easy to find at any grocery store and it is cheap. Many people like to dip their toothbrush into the powder and brush away. Make sure you rinse. Baking soda is an abrasive, so use is sparingly and gently. Repeated use can cause your gums to bleed. You can also add a little citric acid to your baking soda for added effect. Do this twice a day when you are most affected by bad breath and you are on your way.
Sea salt: Another natural way to fight off bad breath is sea salt. This is another natural remedy that works well for many people. Simply add it to your toothbrush twice a day and brush. Make sure that you rinse well. Pay careful attention to the back of your mouth and in between each crevice. Don’t forget to brush your tongue, too. You will find that sea salt actually works quite well.
Don’t diet too much: When you put yourself on a very restrictive diet, such as the diets that lack carbs, you are forcing your body into what is called ketosis. This causes low blood sugar and will give your breath an odd fruity odor. Make sure you keep your diet in check when you are concerned about your breath. On the flip side of that, remember that too much of the wrong kinds of foods can also cause bad breath. Fried and greasy foods are certainly culprits, as are refined carbohydrates and products with lots of sugar.
Drink lots of water: You know that drinking water is very good for you—it is also very good for your breath, too. When you become dehydrated, your dry mouth can get pretty stinky. Make sure you stay hydrated with good fluids and it will help your breath.
