Bad breath is a bad problem. Almost everyone suffers from bad breath, also called halitosis every now and then. Some people even have it chronically. That is why there are so many products on the market to counteract stinky breath. What is halitosis and how can you get rid of it? Here is a closer look.
“H” is for Halitosis: Halitosis is a funny word, but it is certainly not a funny problem. If you have ever had bad breath, then you know that is can, at its worst, be very embarrassing. Forget the old cupping your hand over your mouth and breathing in and out quickly. That won’t give you an accurate picture of your breath. This problem can be caused by a whole host of problems, some more serious than the others. In fact, the condition of your breath, may actually give doctors and dentist an insight to your health.
The most common cause of halitosis, or bad breath, is poor oral hygiene. But that is not always the case. Poor oral hygiene means that perhaps that teeth are not brushed the correct way, or perhaps they are not brushed enough times. There are right and wrong ways to brush your teeth. You must get every particle of food out of there. What about flossing? If you have bad breath, then ask yourself if you floss enough. Dentists recommend that you floss at least once a day, and most people do not follow this regimen.
Reasons of bad breath: Of course, there are other reasons why you may have halitosis. Plaque build up can cause bad breath. For some people, plaque build up has little to do with brushing or how many times you have your teeth cleaned at the dentist. People can get plaque build up naturally and for some people the amount of plaque can become a big problem.
Other reasons for halitosis: Before you start thinking that you must have terrible oral hygiene to have bad breath, wait! There are many other reasons why you have halitosis. The foods that you eat can have a big impact on the smell of your breath. You know how spicy foods and foods such as onions can give you a terrible scent. Most of the time, a good brushing can get rid of the smell. You may also have halitosis if you smoke, use tobacco or drink coffee or hot tea. This will almost always cause halitosis.
Diseases can cause halitosis: You may also find that you have bad breath if you are suffering from certain ailments and diseases. Diabetes can cause bad breath. Upper respiratory infections, asthma, sinusitis, bronchitis and even certain digestive disorders may contribute to your chronic halitosis. If you find that you just can get rid of the bad breath with brushing, flossing and rinsing, then you might see your doctor. There could be an underlying problem that has gone undiagnosed.
