Intestinal Candida

Around 500 species of bacteria, many species of yeast and other organisms, inhabit the human intestinal tract. In an average adult the bacterium weighs about 1kg and it can easily outnumber the total number of cells in the human body. But not all of them cause the disease; rather it would most of them help to protect us from disease. Friendly bacteria mostly have names beginning with ‘Lactobacillus’ or ‘Bifid bacteria’ that denotes the genus they belong to. Food products like yogurt contain these bacteria.

Friendly bacteria aren’t the only type of microorganism present in the human intestinal tract. There are also a number of organisms, which don’t provide the host any benefit or do so only when their numbers are kept low. Such microorganisms are coliform bacteria, yeasts/fungus and bacteroides.

Non-friendly bacteria

Illness occurs when the amount of friendly bacteria is reduced and the non-friendly ones increase their numbers. There are a number of factors that can upset the balance of organisms in the intestines and lead to overgrowth of the candida. Factors contributing the growth of candida are:
* Over doses of antibiotics
* Over doses of the birth control pill
* Use of other hormones like steroids
* Improper Diet
* Consumption of the Alcohol
* Mental Stress
The most important factor is the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. And that’s because these medications don’t precisely discriminate between friendly and pathogenic bacteria. This fact has long been known by researchers and is taught to microbiology students.

The research in this area involving human subjects, regarding Candida in particular, is not very vast due to a lack of agreement on accurate testing methods and the fact that it is a relatively new area of study. Testing small bowel bacterial overgrowth is now becoming established using breath hydrogen testing. There has been an animal research showing that both antibiotics and steroids commonly cause substantial increases in Candida and pathogenic bacterial colonization, due to destruction of friendly bacteria.

Alkalizing
